Terra Cycle Update
Why We're Scaling Back
After three years of participating in TerraCycle programs, we've decided to discontinue most of our collection boxes, except for contact lenses and Brita water filters.
We had hoped TerraCycle would offer a reliable solution for hard-to-recycle items like toothpaste tubes, razors, and deodorant sticks. And that manufacturers would take more responsibility for their packaging.
Unfortunately, the reality of plastic recycling is far more limited—and more toxic—than we imagined.
The Problem with Plastic Recycling
As of 2017, only 5–6% of plastic is recycled in the U.S.
Of that, only 2% is effectively recycled into products of equal value (like bottle-to-bottle).
Most plastic is downcycled into items like single-use bags, and soon ends up in landfills.
Recycling plastic increases toxicity, making it worse for people and the planet.
It's still cheaper to make new plastic than to recycle or reuse existing materials.
“Plastics have no place in a circular economy... the only real solution is to massively reduce plastic production.”
— Greenpeace USA, 2023
Where We Go From Here
We now have better alternatives available—more reusable, refillable, and truly recyclable options.
If you’re unsure how to make the switch, reach out—we’d love to help you find a solution.
Want to keep participating in TerraCycle independently? You can sign up directly on their website and continue collecting from home.
Thank you for understanding and supporting us as we continue making conscious choices.
Textile Recycling
We've partnered with Helpsy, the largest textile collection company in the Northeast, to keep clothing and fabrics out of the landfill.
Helpsy is a Certified B Corp that collected over 25 million pounds of textiles last year.
95% of items are reused, upcycled, or recycled:
75% are resold to thrift shops and secondhand markets
20% are turned into industrial rags, insulation, or stuffing
Textile waste is one of the biggest contributors to global pollution. Every shirt you recycle helps lighten that load.
Why It Matters
Clothes (ripped, stained, or outdated—no problem!)
Shoes (even singles!)
Towels, linens, and bedding
Please make sure all items are clean, dry, and odor-free.
“Anything you can wear, sleep in, or dry yourself off with!”
That includes natural and synthetic materials like cotton, wool, polyester, leather, linen, silk, rayon, hemp, vinyl, and more.
To see a full list of what we accept, see the list in Helpsy.
